Vince Kong commutes to work

Here comes the train!

I have a relatively easy journey to work each day, so why the hell would I get up an hour earlier in order to embark on a journey that's twice as long? Any excuse to become Vince Kong once again!

When I first thought of commuting into work dressed as Vince Kong I thought it was a good idea, but it'd never happen. That all changed when Will agreed to be my co-commuter and cameraman, I am eternally grateful. Thanks very much Will!

The journey to work

At some point in the morning, I managed to get myself showered and cycle across to Will's place, I don't know how, it just happened really. When I got there, I slipped into the Vince Kong outfit and off we set!

Arriving at the metro building

I had to get a travel card first, so we made a quick stop in the newsagent before heading across to the bus stop. It was quite a low-key start, the people at the bus stop didn't seem to be that bothered that there was a rather short gorilla standing right behind them. Except one chap who seemed to have a permanent grin throughout the whole bus journey!

From the bus we boarded the train from Hampton Wick to Clapham Junction (the birth place of my gorilla suit funnily enough!). I'd say that I was easing into my role as Commuter Fool but sadly this isn't quite true, I was certainly enjoying it but when a school kid asked why I was dressed as a gorilla, the only response I could offer was a mumbled unintelligible mess. Yeah, I know, you'd think this is the sort of question I'd have rehearsed and prepared a killer witty response to. Afraid not.

We arrived at Clapham Junction and boarded another platform to Kensington Olympia, by the time we arrived there, I reckon I'd seen about a hundred thousand and fifty four people, and out of all of them, about twenty three registered a response. It may be a London thing or a "it's too early, get out my face" thing but I was surprised at the lack of interest. Well, except the guy that shouted "hoi, monkey boy" at me in order to get me to turn around so he could take a picture, that was good.

The best moment for me came while walking from the train station to the Metro Building in Hammersmith where I work. Just walking down the street we ran into a nun, she was very jolly and seemed to be enjoying the gorilla, before saying the strangest thing, "I wasn't expecting you today?!", I waved and laughed of course, and carried on walking, but what the hell did she mean by "today"? Does she have a gang of gorillas turning up tomorrow and I'm the rogue one that got the date wrong?

The journey home

I walked with Paul and Sean back down to Kensington Olympia, it was a complete contrast to the mornings journey, I noticed a fair few grins and gave out a few waves, we even walked with a mother and her two children for a short while. She claimed I was mad but I don't believe she has the paperwork to back that up.

Rush hour in Vince Kong world

From Kensington Olympia back to Clapham Junction, and then onto Hampton Wick was very busy but I got a fair few smiles and people seemed to enjoy it much more, I was very happy on the inside but on the outside I was boiling up! Every time I tried to satisfy an itch, I'd get monkey fur or sweat in my eyes (rules dictate that I cannot take my gorilla head off until the task is complete), but I made it home successfully and the first thing I did was to take a shower. I stank!

Tomorrow's commute is going to be so dull by comparison!

I walked with Vince Kong to Olympia last night, can't believe how people stare just because someone is a bit more hairy than others - how rude!
Any kids that saw us loved him.

I think you are making a monkey out of commuting. I see in the last photo (just above) that the only person looking at you has a beard. Distant relative maybe !!

Vince. Who knew? All those years we worked together and on the inside was a gorilla just waiting to be unleashed!

Actually, thinking about it, it was pretty obvious really.

Congratulations on the wedding too

Mr Kong, - I am deeply concerned of the fact that you seem to have missed any opportunity to mark the National Gorilla Suit Day (falling every year on the 31st Jan)...

Or is this, beyond "reasonable" doubt, proof that you are not wearing a suit...?

Damn! That was a missed opportunity! Very poor.

Actually, trying to persuade someone to take the photos is proving really rather tricky!
