Vince Kong meets the parents

Vince Kong fills up at the local garage

After shopping for bananas in my gorilla suit last week, I had several options for my next outing, but I didn't expect to be wearing the outfit and meeting Lucy's dad and step mum, Alan and Dreda!

Alan and Dreda live in a small village called Broom near Biggleswade, about 60 miles away from Twickenham and we'd planned to drive up on the Friday afternoon and stay overnight.

I don't know how or why, but the power of the gorilla suit on Lucy seems to have waned over the past few weeks, so when we planned the visit, I mentioned a meet the parents style gorilla suit event and expected a stern no! Instead, after a small amount of persistence, she agreed! I couldn't believe it! So I thought I'd push it a bit and managed to get her agree to visit the local petrol garage for fuel and to check her tyres prior to the trip.

When Friday came around, the suit wasn't mentioned but I knew that she hadn't forgotten as she'd phoned her father the previous evening to warn him that I was coming dressed as a gorilla. It was the afternoon when we left, well, I say we left but I mean when I left as she refused to walk out of the flat with me dressed as a gorilla. So her and her sister left the flat and a minute later, I left. Walking down a busy High Street was brilliant! I could hear a few comments and chuckles, it was excellent!

When I arrived at the car, there was time for a quick photo before being hurried in to the car and sped to the nearest garage. The plan was that I would fill Sarah's car with petrol and then check the tyres on Lucy's car to make sure there was enough air in them. Filling Sarah's car was fun for us but no-one else seem to care, I would have been very surprised to see a gorilla filling a car up with petrol but apparently in London, this is a common occurrence!

Never mind, I filled Lucy's tyres with air and when I was on the third one, a couple of boy-racers pulled up behind us waiting patiently for the air hose. After turning their car stereo down from "ear-bleeding" to a mere "bloody loud", one of them took my picture with his camera-phone and said "Quality mate!". I quickly finished up the last tyre and we left, just in time as the volume of the music made their car explode into a million pieces…ok, maybe that didn't happen but it's a shame it didn't!

The journey up was a non-event, I didn't wear the head very much at all. After an hour though, we began to get close, so I put my head and hands on and prepared myself to meet Alan and Dreda.

When we arrived and parked up, I could see movement from within the house, my big moment was about to happen, I jumped out of the car as the front door opened and greeted my father-in-law to be. Shortly after Dreda and their little dog Alice, came and joined us. I didn't realise until this point that Dreda was completely unaware that I was travelling up dressed as a gorilla, I don't think anyone had told Alice either!

It was a great evening though and Alan and Dreda were as welcoming as always, despite me being a gorilla, and as far as I know the wedding is still on! So all in all, a very successful weekend!

I would almost of thought you had met them before they were that welcoming. Did you wear the head all the time you were there too? That would have been scary.

You don't think they will be thinking you are going to get married in the gorilla outfit? That woudl be class but not appreciated by many.

I can see it now...

As Vince Kong's best man I shall be definitely advocating that he walks down the aisle in full gorilla attire - 'Do you take this gorilla to be your lawful wedded husband?'

I dare you to come and visit me in full gorilla suit - I'll even come to Lima to meet you and see you through customs and travel back to Cusco with you :) Although I have to say the 14 1/2 flight from Amsterdam could be a little uncomfortable, and the hours stop over in Bonaire in the Caribean may be a 'little' warm!

Looks like a challenge Vince.

Hard to ignore isn't it.... go on you know you want to. I'd suggest though that an adapted suit might be in order, think Bermuda Kong. I'll even help you make the alterations myself :-)

I like it Will! I had thought of playing squash with it on and with a John McEnroe style headband, but the bermuda theme? Hummm....
