My new Suzuki GS500E

My great Suzuki GS500

Hooray! At last!!!! After talking about it for so long, I've put my money where my mouth is and bought myself a real, grown up, proper motorbike! I've ridden my Aprilia SR 125 scooter for the past 4 and half years and, as fantastic as it was, I always yearned for a bigger bike.

Two and a half years ago I took the first step and took my full motorcycle license, mainly so I can take passengers on my scooter but always in the back of my head was a proper bike. Now, I type this with my Suzuki GS500E sitting outside!

By the way, buying my new bike was in no way related to me watching the great Long Way Round with Ewan McGregor and Charlier Boorman a couple of days before...well, maybe just a little!

The days before collection

I bought the bike on the Saturday and had to wait a few days before I collected it. Days that were filled with nervous anticipation. I was nervous about going from a 125cc to a 500cc and going from an automatic gearbox to a manual, but eagerly anticipating weekends biking through the countryside or gently cruising down to the coast.

Collection day

I left work early on the big day, and after completing the paperwork and given a tour of the bike, my big moment came. I was so keen not to look a complete prick by stalling or falling off right outside the shop, that I eased away so carefully I practically powered the thing under my own steam. I got about 20 seconds down the road, out of sight of the shop and pulled into a side road, breathed a huge sigh of relief...and promptly stalled the thing!

Over the next few days I rode everywhere, gradually getting better and better (in my humble opinion). Fair enough I'm still stalling it every now and again, on one occasion squashing my plums so hard that I thought I would be able to take up choir singing there and then!

And the bike?

The bike is great, its such a breeze to ride. Fair enough, I haven't got much to compare it with but for a first bike, it's perfect for me! I was really concerned about the speed aspect but at the moment I reckon the Aprilia was just as quick off the lights as the Suzuki (maybe I should push it a bit more though). The main difference is how smooth and easy everything now is, although there's is more to think about now what with having to change gears and all that.

As great as it is though, I can't wait until I upgrade again! I've got my eye on a nice shiny Yamaha Fazer!

I recommend these

  • I bought my Suzuki from HGB Motorcycles and would certainly recommend them. They were very friendly and helpful and I look forward to heading back there for my next bike!
  • I passed my test with Passmasters and my CBT with Metropolis, both were excellent.
  • I'd love to recommend the company who I bought my Aprilia off of, but there's no chance! They were exceptional rude and dealing with them was such an effort.
  • I will recommend Aprilia though, I really liked my scooter although I did find it expensive when it came to repairs.
