Apology to Swindon

Swindon, I am very sorry!

Department sent to: Swindon Appreciation Department

Hi there,

For many years now, I've always thought and known of Swindon as the kind of town that's the punch line to many jokes, but it occurred to me last night that I don't know why and I think perhaps I'm being a little unfair and harsh on your town!

I think a little of it has to do with the marvellous Eddie Izzard, I remember one sketch he did when he was talking about the British Space Program and in it there was a chap standing on the top rung of a ladder saying "Come in Swindon, do you read me?". It's very funny, I recommend it!

But back to the point, it's not that I have anything against Swindon, far from it, I probably mention it more than any other town in the UK but I guess that you can hardly call it positive press. My problem is that I just don't know why! With something like Milton Keynes or Slough, it's obvious and something you can put your finger on but not with Swindon. I never even been to Swindon!

Do you know something else as well, I've only ever met one person from Swindon. This could be for two reasons, one, Swindon is fantastic and no-one wants to leave, or two, perhaps they're a little embarrassed to say they are from Swindon and actually pretend to be from Leeds (of which I've met loads of people, surely they can't all really be from Leeds can they?). Or maybe there's a third, which is just that that's the way it is, I've never actually met anyone Stilton but I don't go on about that town...well, actually, I do. I am partial to a bit of Stilton (the cheese that is).

Anyway, I would like to apologise to yourselves and indeed the whole of Swindon (if you could let them know, that would be great). I shall make it my priority next year to actually get to Swindon and see such sights as the Magic Roundabout and Pete & Dave's Dodo Emporium.

Many apologies and thanks for listening (or reading).

Vince.
